Most of the people tend to do over coating of stains which is not recommended as leads to build up of material forming a film that may eventually peel or crack. On a water repellant wood, over coating results in sticky surfaces as it prevents proper drying up.

Before applying the stain, the deck should be clean of all debris and mildew growth and completely dry. Stains can be applied using roller, brush, spray or a pad; however, brushing is considered the best method. For large, horizontal deck surfaces, spraying is fast and easy. For deck sidings, paint rollers can be used. Coating should be done carefully to prevent uneven coatings. Individual pieces of wood on the deck have to be coated along their entire length to prevent coating and marking laps.
