Type of insecticide used for Cotton:
Insecticides are big business. If someone looks at the chart of the growth of the industry from virtually zero in the 1early years. But now its growth is more then 5% per year. The large number of insecticides is sprayed on cotton. Cotton is one of the most chemical-intensive crops in the world. Cotton requires many applications of insect-killers, weed-killers, plant growth regulators and other types of insecticides for its safety. If someone lives near a cotton-growing area, one may be exposed to these chemicals through drift or runoff. Some of these chemicals may be applied to cotton fields from airplanes, which can raise the chances of contaminating neighboring areas.
Need to grow cottons:
Fertilizers form the bulk of agrochemicals used to produce cotton. Like all other agricultural crops, nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium are the main elements needed to grow cotton. Nitrogen has to be applied beneath all set of growing conditions because plant needs for nitrogen are severely different at various stages of development. It is still not used on all the cotton area in the world. Almost all or more than 90% of the total cotton area is treated with nitrogen. Nitrogen is applied to about 85% of the total cotton area in many areas in the world. Cotton fields give both food and cover for wildlife. Quail and other birds nest in grassy strips alongside cotton fields. Farm wildlife is often called edge species because they live in non crop areas like hedgerows or along the edges of fields. Wildlife that lives in these areas finds food and gravel in the adjacent crop fields.
Effect on wildlife:
Wildlife those are directly exposed to toxic pesticides can become sick or die. In a study of quail living near cotton fields that had been sprayed with methyl parathion, 35 percent had sufficient insecticide in their bodies to cause sickness or death. Birds that are sick by insecticides may neglect their young, abandon their nests and become more vulnerable to predators or disease. While direct poisoning from toxic pesticides is an alarm, many pesticides that are not highly toxic can still be dangerous to wildlife by reducing the food and cover that wildlife require in order to survive. Insecticides decrease insect foods and herbicides decrease plant cover.
