Prevent Crabgrass

Introduction

In home lawns, crabgrass is a primary problem. It is tenacious weed. It can be classified into large crabgrass, smooth crabgrass and southern crabgrass. Crab grass is a warm-season, yearly grass. It doesn't matter how much crabgrass plants appeared the previous year as they all perish. New grass reappears only from developing seeds. Crabgrass starts germinating only when soil temperature reaches 60 degrees and remains the same for many days. This happens mostly at the end of May or start of June. Crabgrass required sunny days, moisture and sparse lawns, which don't prevent sunlight to reach the soil.

Procedure

Proper lawn practices, which ensure thick lawns, which keep the soil in shade, prevent crabgrass. The height of mowing lawns has a profound effect. If it is kept between two and a half to three inches the crabgrass problem will be minimized. Also, do not have light water sprinkles often. Lawn renovation should never be done in summer as it provides open spaces for growth. In spring, use preemergence herbicides for crabgrass control. These are to be applied before new sprouts of crabgrass are seen. End of April to start of May is the recommended period for these herbicides. Mostly these herbicides are combined with fertilizers so that both aims can be attained simultaneously. All preemergence herbicides for crabgrass also damage newly sprouting desirable grass seed. The main disadvantage is that these preemergence herbicides are blanket-applied and hence the entire lawn has to be treated. If post emergence herbicides are used selective use can be done. Get rid of crabgrass quickly as a harmless appearance can convert into a thick patch later. After removing it mulch the soil to ascertain that the roots, which remain, do not seed with time. Also rinse the mower to prevent the crabgrass affect the other areas.
