There are a lot of framing companies that have majority of customers as photographers and the bulk of their sales are for galleries, art shows, and common retail of photo prints. Due to this reason they mostly specialize in Gallery Style picture frames. Gallery style picture frames are not for everyone and its selection depends on the house dcor and individual tastes. In Gallery Style picture frames the objective is for the frame to place the artwork off from the wall and highlight it without disparaging from the picture. In common it relies on a simple, rather thin black frame with a moderately big white mat. A large mat would be about a 3 to 4 inch border around the picture. The image must be kept off the glass or acrylic and hence the use of a mat or spacer is critical for upkeep.

The Advantages

There are certain advantages of Gallery style picture frames. One of the advantages of this style is that it helps give steadiness for a gallery exhibition of photographers work. In case if the photographer has an identifiable style, the consistency of the frames will facilitate to keep them from disturbing that style or theme. These types of frames can also be reused for lots of different pictures. Gallery style picture frames work very well with the contemporary home dcor styles. It does not go very well with "rural country' or "rustic" home dcor styles.

In the non-gallery style the purpose is to generate a frame package which is an extension of the artwork. Typically one tries to select a color or two in the image and after that select a complimentary mat and frame colors so that they pop or to emphasize those colors. One may also select a shape for the frame which provides consistent lines with the flow of the image. Skilled customer framers are great at this and thus custom frames are reasonably more expensive. The non-gallery style may also consist of mat/frame collection associated to the home dcor. Surely this is not a concern while displaying artwork in galleries and more neutral style which is gallery style is more beneficial in this case.
