Floor Insulation

Rooms can sometimes feel cold due to strong drafts rising up from gaps between the floorboards or between the skirting board and the floor. In a well-insulated house floors in the unheated areas like garages and basements can contribute to heat loss. If there is careful planning insulating the floors of garage or basement is not a difficult task.

Basement floor insulation

The basement floor insulation barrier will help keep warm air in, and the vapor barrier will keep unwanted moisture out. Insulation is a product when installed works efficiently, quietly and is enclosed within a structure, casing or under cladding. While installing insulation the minutest of details needs to taken into consideration as any shortfall in the thickness or error in the type and application details will prove costly to rectify later.

How to insulate the floors over basements

Seal all penetrations into conditioned spaces above with caulk or foam prior to insulating. Check plumbing and electrical penetrations especially those that go up through the walls. Spread the base gravel under the basement slab and then place a 1-inch layer of 4'x8' extruded polystyrene foam board over the gravel. Tape the joints between the boards with builder's tape and also see to it that the tape has no gaps and tear. This builder's tape will act as the vapor barrier. Place metal insulation support rods, also known as tiger teeth to support the insulation. Compress the batt no more than an inch with the curved rod.

Types of floor insulation products

1. Polyfoam floorboard is a thermal insulation of floors. It is know for its ozone friendly, high performance and rigid board insulation. The other features are lightweight, excellent structural strength and long-term life span. Polyfoam floorboard is available in three grades. They are standard used for general domestic flooring, extra and super polyfoam floorboard is used for commercial and industrial flooring.

2. Rockwool rockfloor is a tissue faced high compressive strength slab designed for acoustic and thermal insulation of ground and separating floors. These insulators are easy to handle and fit. They are highly compressive resistant and have efficient and effective acoustic and thermal properties.

3. Rocksil floor slabs are used to insulate the timber floors. This product is known for its acoustic and thermal properties. They are rigid and compression resistant slab of rock mineral wool.
