Cultivators
Classification
A Field Cultivator has metallic teeth to split the soil and is pulled by a tractor. It mixes the soil and uproots weeds. A Disk Cultivator has circular metal blades. A Hand Cultivator is of synthetic material or metal and has curved spikes to hold and uproot weeds or break clods. A Tiller, also called as a Soil Cultivator, breaks the hard surface and adds organic materials into the lawn soil. Earlier humans or animals were used for power. But now engines powered by gas are being used to rotate the blades. High Wheeled cultivators have a big wheel about 2 feet diameter, a pair of handles and a wooden or steel frame. 3 tools can be fixed over the cultivator. A straight shovel is used for making troughs. A twisted plow is used for making furrows or throwing soil over crops like sweet corn or potatoes. Some of the cultivators have angled pairs of revolving spokes. The main requirement is that it must be able to develop the surface of the lawn.
Examples
Some Cultivators are lightweight, powerful and versatile. Other types include a Spade Cultivator, Hoe Cultivator Combo, Cultivator Loop Hoe Combo or One Prong Cultivator. A Mantis Cultivator is small and ideal for flowerbeds or for digging the area between seed rows in the lawn. Some cultivators are available in one or three or four-prong head designs. There are aluminum handles with non-slipping vinyl handles. They can provide a long life heavy-duty use. A Garden Weasel has two handles and detachable blades. Others are Fiskars Softouch Cultivator, The Garden Claw Cultivator, Rainbow Gardener 4-Prong Cultivator, OXO Good Grips Stainless Cultivator. CAMON Cultivators are prevalent in UK for tough cultivating tasks in very demanding soil textures. Folding handles cultivators and Mini cultivators are also available.
Use
Cultivators are used to break up the soil of a lawn to help in the removal of weeds and for aerating the soil. It is also used to merge manure and fertilizer in the soil. It is easier to use them if the lawn surface is moist but not wet or very hard and dry.
