You have a garden a rather big garden. And you like to entertain people. You have friends coming over almost all weekends. They love coming over. Your family loves having the friends over. Everything seems almost perfect. Almost… Except for the fact that you need to do something about your garden. You have tried some garden fence paint. That hasn't worked. You tried putting plastic coating on the fence that hasn't worked either.

That's when you came across Cuprinol Deck Stain.

Why Stain Decks?

Staining your decks can protect them from damage. It will not just look good but will also be protected from stormy weather and strong ultraviolet rays. The other reason to stain a deck is to prevent it from turning yellow, which it does due to constant exposure to sunlight. You can also save your deck from errant kids or guests who are used to dropping things all over. A stained deck is so easy to clean.

Why Use Cuprinol Stains?

Cuprinol deck stains have special features that make them the most preferred choice to stain garden decks. The Cuprinol deck stain is of semi-transparent matt finish that colors garden decks. It also provides abrasion resistant and water repellent finish. It is available in a wide variety of colors that will add life to your deck, literally! There are eight premium colors ranging from attractive shades of green to shades of mahogany. It is available in 2.5 liter pack sizes. This one 2.5 liter packet is enough for bare decks or for decks that have been stained earlier.

Here are the advantages of the super tough Cuprinol deck stains:

Scuff resistance
Peeling and cracking resistance
Protection in all kinds of weather
Resistance to color fading

Tips to Remember

Here are a few things to remember while you stain your decks:

Stain your decks during dry weather. Do not stain it when the weather is at an extreme (too hot or too cold).

Use small paint brushes to reach tiny nooks and corners of your deck.

Pressure washers are to be handled with care. The force of water is very strong and can cause harm to people and surrounding fauna and flora.

It's a good idea to follow instructions.

Use all safety equipment like rubber gloves and glasses.

Be very careful in disposing stains and do it based on the instructions on the container or manual.

Samuel is a lost man. He has painted his deck three times and all the time there has been some glitch. "It just doesn't come out right," he groaned to his wife Kelly. "I need the perfect formula for staining my deck!"
Samuel started reading and talking to his friends who had perfect decks and here's what he came up with.

Prepare Your Deck

You need to prepare the surface of the deck before you start painting it. Scrub it and then clean it thoroughly dry. All forms of indentations and outcroppings should be minimized before the coating is applied.

Prepare the Stain

Before application, mix all requisite cans together to make a uniform mixture. If you have mixed it and gone off, lumps may have formed. Stir it again well. During application, keep stirring it.

It is also a good idea to apply the stain to a small area before you stain the entire deck. See how your deck reacts to that particular stain color and type. Sometimes when the color dries it might look different than what it looks in the can. Let the temperatures be when you apply between 45 degree to 90 degree Fahrenheit. Try not to apply this test coat during rainy or very hot weathers. Wait for the color to dry off completely till you start applying over the entire deck.

Prepare Yourself

Try not to apply the stain after you have tired yourself after jogging, running after your dog, and mowing the lawn! Phew… Do it when your mind is fresh and ready to do a full day's work.

How to Apply

Apply the stain evenly over the surface. Once the first coat is soaked up, apply the next and the next. Try not to create a puddle of stain. Remove all excess stain at the earliest.

Specialized Tools

The tools used for application are a good brush, an airless sprayer, a good garden sprayer (pump-like), a handy stain pad or a roller, and a duster.

After Application

Your job does not end after application. You need to take care of the deck of you have painted. It would be a nice idea to keep an 'Off Limit' or `Please Take Care' sign. You would also need to reapply the stain every 2-3 years depending on the kind of weather around your home.

All in all, deck painting can be fun and the magic formula is to do it with loads of enthusiasm and preparing yourself well for the event.

Dog-gone Right!

Kim Bright has recently become the doting owner of Edward. Edward is a three-month-old pure breed Labrador. Much as she loves the attention Edward gets from the neighboring kids, she knows that lack of training can make him a menace for the same kids.

So she looks up options to train him and she realizes that most dog owners train their dogs at home – in their backyards. Kim has a big backyard and she goes about planning to make her yard the perfect training ground for Edward.

There are a few things Kim starts doing…

Backyard Cleaning

Kim first makes a list of all the items she has in her yard. Once that is done, she eliminates all the elements that are old or are not required anymore. She takes care to see that the there is a lot of free space in the center of the yard and the edges are free of unnecessary obstruction.

Three Basics

The next she does is identifies her needs for the following three criteria:
1) Budget
2) Breed of dog
3) Aesthetics

Choosing the Appropriate Fence

Now, Kim goes through the types of fences. Here's the list she has:
1) Basic Farm Fence: This type of fence consists of a thin steel wire mesh with large rectangular holes at the top and smaller holes at the bottom. It is cheap and is excellent for big dogs.
2) Snow Fence: A snow fence is a wire mesh fabric fence mounted over posts, but with the whole width varying from 2-4 inches. This is one of the cheaper fences available and is again good for large dogs.
3) Chain Link Fence: This fence, as the name suggests, fits like a chain. The steel fabric is stretched over pipes. It is one of the most common fences and can be used for small dogs too. It is more expensive than the ones mentioned above, but it is long-lasting.
4) Split Rail Fences: This is one of the nicer looking fences and the expenses for constructing this is at a medium range. It consists of a wooden board rail with cross boards. You may need to attach a fabric rail at the bottom of the fence to prevent your dog running out.
5) Picket Fences: Perhaps the most fantasized of all fences, a picket fence consists of small boards nailed on larger boards. Picket fences look good and are expensive, but not as expensive as constructing a wall.
6) Wall Fences: A proper stone wall fence done artistically can be the best option to holding your dog within your backyard. It is expensive though and for it to look good, you may need to spend more.

Won't You Come into My Patio?

For the Henderson's their patio was their pride. They have alcoves and dainty little seats in their patio. To make it look nice, they painted it a dusky brown color. Unfortunately, the paint was not for the patio and parts started peeling off, much to the Henderson's' chagrin.

A friend told them that patios don't need to be painted. In fact, they would wonderful if they are stained. Especially, if they use concrete stains for a concrete patio like the Henderson's' have.

A patio is nothing but an interior courtyard or a paved backyard area. Nevertheless, since it can cover large areas, some people believe that patios can change the way their entire house looks.

Paint, since it is superficial will form a film and hence peels off. Stains go within the concrete and stain it beyond the surface. A good quality stain lasts for five years. And stains fade and don't peel off. Therefore, visually too they are much better looking than paint.

Types of Concrete Stains:

The three types of concrete stains are acid-based stain, solvent-based stain, and water-based stains.

The first one – acid-based stain – has an acid chemically attaching to the concrete surface. In this staining the color actually seeps into the concrete to become a part. It is known as the best staining method.

The stain using a solvent again permeates through the concrete pores. The surface of the concrete goes a long way in deciding how the stain will appear when it dries. A patio that is cleaned with a broom is more absorbent to the stain than a smooth glistening surface.

The water-based stain is environmentally friendly. It can produce some nice shades. This stain uses acrylic elements to fix the color to the concrete.

Tips to Remember:

1. Remember to get the right kind of stain. Some stains tend to leave a film on the concrete surface.
2. Use rubber gloves while you are applying the stain on the patio.
3. Before you start staining, remember to remove the sticky grease and oil stains by hosing it down with a pressure washer. If need be, use a degreaser too.
4. For best results let the stain dry for 48 hours. Later, brush off any extra stain or powder that may lie on the surface.
5. Applying a second coat may do wonders to the final effect of the staining. But remember to wait long enough for the first paint to dry off completely before applying the next coat.

Stain That Does Not Weather:

Emory Fix had lived in her ancestral property for many years. The cottage had seen better days. Emory, now 60, remembers running through the wooden corridors for hours and not getting anywhere.

Most of the cottage was not leased out. But she had her own little corner where she had her little garden. Recently her friend, Martha, mentioned the condition of here rather badly scuffed deck.

That hurt Emory. And she was trying so hard to make the cottage look pretty all the time. She remembers Martha, "You know our weather. There's very little I can do to keep that deck from looking the way it looks now."

Martha said, "You should stain your deck. Once you stain them well, you will not have any problem with the deck. A stain not only protects but also adds decorative value."

Emory had heard of stains but she thought that mere staining would not withstand the weather conditions of their countryside. Martha corrected her saying that there are stains that help with rough weathers too.

Combat Weather:

Many a time the condition of your deck is a reflection of your overall surroundings. Weather affects your deck severely. If you have tall trees or deciduous trees around your deck, it will lead to a lot of fallen leaves and dampness.

In case of decks that are exposed to intense heat, an acrylic stain that is mixed with iron oxide or some semi-transparent or opaque pigment works fine. The additives provide a higher color retention capacity than other transparent colors. Not to mention that they inadvertently protect your wood from graying and degradation of the surface.

Constant dampness and rain can also cause a lot of problem. Dampness leads to growth of mildew. In that case use a water-repellent stain with preservative.

The preservative helps your deck by giving it added protective against growth of any fungus. The growing fungi harm the surface of the wood. It also saves it from any kind of rot, mold, and decaying.

If you face constant snow and need to shovel your deck regularly, do not use a metal shovel. These metal shovels can rupture your wood covering and cause erosion. The erosion will lead to the disintegration of the wood quickly.

It is a good idea to not coat your deck soon after rainfall. It is a good idea to coat your deck during runny weather.

Linseed oil is one of the principal useful natural oils. It is extracted from flax seed. It is used as a stabilizer for wood, concrete, and an ingredient in paints, varnishes, and stains. As if that was not enough, it is as well used in soaps, inks, and in the production of linoleum. Make a note of the fact that the first three letters of linoleum are lin… for linseed! However for home repair purposes the preservative qualities of linseed oil is our center of attention. Let us ponder about this stealth product the majority people will never use alone, but we all depend on every day.

Raw linseed oil is just linseed oil ruthlessly squeezed from flax seed and packaged through no additional additives or preservatives. Raw linseed oil dries at a very snail's pace, taking weeks to completely cure. You must limit its use to the insides of wood gutters, chopping blocks, sawhorses, and additional items exposed to the elements where drying time is not a deliberation. Boiled linseed oil is actually not boiled as the name suggests. The real boiling of some oils changes their drying distinctiveness. In the company of linseed oil, despite the fact that, it is the addition of certain solvents that causes linseed oil to dry more quickly, acting as if it were boiled. This makes it a enhanced product for preserving tool handles, decks, and furniture. I assume they should have named it 'sort of boiled linseed oil', or 'kinda like boiled but not really boiled linseed oil'.

In spite of the claims of linseed oil manufacturers and salesmen, there is a commercial wood preservative that betters linseed oil's performance for roughly every application. Maybe the only reason to mull over using linseed oil as a preservative is the cost. Linseed oil is of a lesser amount than half the price of a commercial preservative. But linseed oil do has some negatives. Agreed that it has been used with a number of success for many years. But today, there are scads of linseed oil-based paints and preservatives that get bigger on linseed oil's good qualities while overcoming.

Pollution and environment care:

There is pollution around us. There are various elements within this pollution and toxic agents are one of them. The paints and varnishes that are used to finish decks also release certain amounts of toxic emissions in the atmosphere.

Pollution and environment care:

There is pollution around us. There are various elements within this pollution and toxic agents are one of them. The paints and varnishes that are used to finish decks also release certain amounts of toxic emissions in the atmosphere. Increased awareness about the hazards of the toxic emissions has resulted in development of the Non-Toxic stains, paints and varnishes. Most paint and varnish manufacturers offer the non-toxic versions in the low VOC category. VOC is Volatile Organic compound, which is the main source of toxic emission.

Advantages of non-toxic stains:

There is obvious health and environment related benefits of using non-toxic stains. Reduced or no toxic emissions cause no discomfort to people with allergies or any kind of sensitivity to chemicals. It keeps the surroundings healthier. Being water based, these are very easy to maintain and clean. Just a warm water and soap solution is good enough for cleaning it up.

Types of non-toxic stains and how to use them:

The term non-toxic is a generally used term here and the stains or paints, which are labeled as non-toxic, also contain small, very small proportions of VOC. While a toxic stain could contain about 300 gms per litre of VOC, a non-toxic stain must not have anything above 200 gms per litre. There are even lower compositions available into the market. There are also Zero VOC stains in the market and these contain less than 15 Gms per litre of VOC.The low or zero VOC stains have no petroleum based solvents and use water instead. This is why; the emission levels are remarkably low. However, the low VOC stains may emit some odor until the surface has not dried out. Incase someone is very sensitive to the smells; there are stains with a VOC of less than 35 gms per litre to choose from.

The costs:

The high VOC toxic stains being hazardous are also cheaper. But even though we may have to pay a higher start up price for the low or zero VOC stains, the medium and long term benefits clearly outweigh the slightly higher initial costs. It is also a small step we can take towards building a cleaner and healthier world around us.

Finally, a faux coat is installed to bring out the colors, all the lines are burnished with a stiff wire brush, and then a breathable sealer is installed to protect the surface in furtherance.

Polishing concrete and concrete staining

Concrete is fast becoming the most ultimate no-wax flooring material. Due to recent advances in polishing equipment and techniques, contractors are now grinding concrete floor surfaces-whether new or old-to a high-gloss finish that never needs waxes or coatings. Factor in the superior durability and performance of concrete, and it's not to be strange why more retail, warehouse, and office facilities are opting for the polished concrete flooring as an alternative to marble, granite, tile, or coated concrete. Even the homeowners are catching on to the appeal of these smooth, high-luster floors, which can be stained to replicate the look of polished stone.

Can concrete be polished against concrete staining?

Almost every structurally sound concrete floor, whether new or old, can be polished. But there are some exceptions present. For new floors polishing is very easy no special mix design is required to achieve good results. However, the floor should be in place at least 28 days before polishing begins to ensure adequate curing of the floor. There are some precaution, which is needed to take, existing floors typically require some surface preparation prior to polishing to remove dirt, grease, coatings, or blemishes. However, floors that are wavy, need extensive patching, or are extremely porous may not be good suitable candidates for polishing.

In order to help solidify and densify polished concrete surfaces, some contractors apply penetrating hardeners to the concrete, normally after the first step of the grinding process. These products, which can be applied to new or existing floors, work by reacting chemically with the concrete to form a hard, crystalline structure. They also help to prevent dusting of concrete and offer extra protection from water penetration and staining.

Stain From the Home:

The market is flooded with staining products that completely confuse you. While you know what you want, you probably don't know which brand to take. All in all, a stain is nothing but adding color to the wood. A stain can be used for various functions like making a surface dark, polishing a surface, preventing a deck from abuse, and adding an aesthetic appeal.

Stain Content:

A stain contains a dye, a pigment, and a carrier. It is the property of the carrier that will determine whether the stain is oil-based or water-based.

Staining Secret for Homes:

Traditionally, woodworkers have used stains made right at home. They use natural dyes and pigments and create their own stains.

Make Stains at Home:

The following ingredients are needed for making stains at home:
1. Ammonia
2. Turpentine
3. Nails
4. Asphalt
5. Vinegar
6. A cloth to strain
7. Glass containers
It is very important to remember the quantity of stain used to create the stain. This will help you recreate the stain again anytime.

Creating Stains in a Water Base:

Dark stains can be created by soaking iron nails in vinegar solution for many days. The vinegar darkens in the presence of iron. You can use this solution on a piece of wood to check the shade, This kind of process takes some time because the wood will not show any effect initially, It becomes gray with time. You can get different colors by using various products like tobacco, walnut husks, and such natural pigments.

Creating Stains in an Oil Base:

To create oil-based stains use any of the pigments to turpentine or mineral spirits. For example, if you wanted a dark stain, add asphalt to the turpentine. Strain the mixture through a cloth into a clean container. Test this solution on a piece of wood. In this method the application differs. Apply a small amount and then wipe it off as soon as it dries. The stain underneath will show the actual shade of the stain. Repeat the process till you get a desired shade.

The most important point of distinction between homemade stains and commercial stains is that homemade stains do not contain binding agents. Therefore, to apply a finish wait till the homemade stain dries off completely. Since the stain is delicate, be careful while applying the stain. Sometimes while applying the finish the stain may be damaged or may come off.

Deck is a porch that resembles the deck on a ship. Ultra violet rays from sun, debris and water damages deck. Many people often think that deck as self-cleaning, when in reality it needs to be cleaned as much as a kitchen floor. Maintenance of deck requires constant care. Stain protects and colors the wood, allowing the beauty of the wood grain and texture to show through. Stain will keep deck looking good and will restore its natural oils and protect it from ultraviolet rays and water damage. Here's how to apply deck stain.

Day-to-Day care:
Remove fallen leaves for better air circulation this will prevent leaves from rotting and allow debris to collect. Keep cracks of deck board clean. Use pot stand to keep potted plants elevated.

Six monthly Cares
Experts recommend major spring and fall deck cleanings by applying coat.

Application of Stain:
1. If any areas of the deck have started to splinter or crack scrub thoroughly with sand paper to remove any dead wood fibers and till new layer of wood is visible.
2. Then clean it thoroughly with high-pressure sprays, which will remove debris by force.
3. Allow deck to dry completely. If stained while the deck is still wet, the oil won't penetrate the wood. The stain will just penetrate the surface, instead of seeping in. Cover wood surface as much as possible for staining.
4. Choose a stain of your choice.
5. Fill bucket with stain of choice.
6. Immerse a brush (use a 4-inch brush) or long-handled roller into the stain. Absorb only enough stain for a few strokes. If possible, use a roller to first apply the stain, and then apply into the wood with brush. Use a paintbrush for difficult-to-reach places.
7. Wipe excess stain with duster.
8. Avoid coating at midday or in direct sunlight. Do not stain deck in extreme weather condition such as hot, cold or if windy.
9. If a second coat required wait for 4 hrs between applications.
10. Wait for 24hrs before using Deck.

Selecting Stain:

A clear stain will make deck's natural beauty will shine through. But will require application of coat every 12 to 18 months. A semitransparent or tinted stain if used will need application every three or four years. Stains with pigment in the oil are more resistant to UV damage. A pigmented stain having sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 will protect deck from harmful ultra-violet rays.

Precaution

Use extreme care when using a pressure spray – the force of the water can cause injury.
Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves. Dispose of stain according to instruction on the container

Although most modern decks are made out of the water resistant pressure treated wood, this is not sufficient to give your deck total protection from the elements of nature and the sloppier elements of humanity. Staining your deck will prevent cracking, splintering and yellow that often come after exposure to rain wind and snow. It also ensures that when a youngster or an oldster drops a particularly sticky ice cream cone on the deck, the mess will be easy to clean, and it will not leave a nasty stain.

Basic requisite:

As staining is not a hard work to be done, but perfect ness will depend upon the use of proper material. There are some requisites which will help in the process these includes, Deck cleaning solution and a good sprayer, Deck sealant or stain, Rags, Garden hose, Natural-bristle brush, Plastic drop cloths, there are several steps which need to be followed when setting out to stain your deck .If you do, your deck should be protected for at least a couple of years. After that, you can just sand off the top coat.

Instructions:

Remove or securely cover any delicate plants and shrubs in the area. Wash the deck with a hose. To clean the deck, put the appropriate deck cleaning solution into a sprayer and apply it evenly to the top of the deck. Allow the deck cleaner to stand. After 5 or 10 minutes, use your garden hose to wash the deck cleaner off. Allow the clean deck to dry. When completely dry, apply the sealant or stain to the wood. There are numerous types of deck sealants and stains, ranging from solid colours to transparent colours, so take care to choose one that you like. Choose a quality brush to apply the stain. The brush should be made of naturally sourced bristles, not synthetics.Avoiding direct sunlight, apply the finish in small areas at a time. Always brush with the grain of the wood. To ensure penetration into the wood, apply the stain in thin coats. A rag can be used to remove any excess stain. Once the process is completed, apply more stain to the end grains of the decking. For areas that get high levels of use, apply a second coat.

Benjamin Moore techniques are a simple way to spruce up Deck or exterior furnishing. It comes in affordable range Benjamin Moore Exterior Stains are made to protect different types of wood. Improve its natural luster. It can be used for any exterior wood surface such as deck, siding, fence, or lattice

Steps in Application of Stain:

Surface preparation is essential for achieving maximum durability. Allow deck to dry thoroughly. Experts recommend a period of 5 day drying before coat. Use moisture meter to check the water content of wood.

* If any areas of the deck have started to splinter or crack scrub thoroughly with sand paper to remove any dead wood fibers and till new layer of wood is visible.
* Then clean with brush to remove debris.
* Area to be coated must be clean, dry, and free of dirt, mildew, oil, or grease. Remove contaminants or chalky residue from weathered painted surfaces by washing with Bejamin Moore clean multipurpose cleaner.
* Remove scales, flakes, or peels from previously stained or painted decks by scraping or by coating with Bejamin Moore Remove.
* Decide on the floor pattern and its placement. Try to work with natural lines of wood.
* Use knife to carve pattern. Do not carve deeply but enough to make pattern visible.
* Cover the patterned area with tape.
* Apply selected stain in remaining area.
* Coat vertical area first, Apply as little stain as possible with brush.
* Apply the stain to entire unit of board else there will be lap marks.
* Followed by application in horizontal area.
* In patterned area start with the lightest color first and gradually move towards darker color.
* Apply stain to the edge of patterned lines.

Useful Tips:

If brushing two different colors which are close, start with lighter color.
Always coat the elevated areas of pattern first. Dribbles stain from elevated pattern may spoil the lower finished surface.

Recommendations:

1 Previously Stained, Painted, or Sealed Wood:
Primer: No priming necessary.
Finish: Single coat Bejamin Moore stain

2. To prevent premature cracking and peeling, do not apply more than two coats.
New Wood or Properly Prepared Weathered Wood: Acrylic Primer Bejamin Moore

3. Two topcoats are recommended for redwood and Cedar, a coat Bejamin Moore of Acrylic Alkyd Primer should be used before top coating.

Warning
If difficulty in breathing is experienced leave the area to obtain fresh air. If breathing problem persists get medical attention.

To have a clean and neat home is something that all will want. Exterior living has become very popular especially in the west. Thus the exterior house stains and deck stains have become a big nuisance and a challenge. For deck stains Cabot deck stain is number one. It helps prevent mildew on the deck without harming the stains. If the surface of the wood is not cleaned or washed properly, the stain will wear off. They are available in many colors.

What is Cabot Deck Stain?

It is an oil-based product, which is semi transparent in its looks. The semi transparent beauty of the Cabot deck stain brings out the beauty of the wood and provides deep protection. Cabot Deck Stains are durable and can be used for all types of wood decks and fences. They are mostly used on lumber such as cedar, fir, pine, redwood, spruce, cypress and all pressure treated wood. Before applying Cabot deck stain the remaining stain has to be removed and then only apply the Cabot deck stain.

Uses Of Cabot Deck Stain:

The main use of Cabot deck stain is that it protects the wood also giving it a beautiful look. They also prevent in the cracking, peeling and blistering of the wood. They are water repellents and mildew resistant stains. Prevents the formation of the mildew on the wood. This helps the wood to beautify and give a good look to your wood.

Maintenance tips for Deck:

1) Clean the surface: The most important step in deck maintenance is cleaning. Old finishes have to be stripped off with the help of a stripper. Wood cleanser can be used to remove dirt, algae. Decking stains will not be effective on dirt and algae. Terefore the cleaning process is very important. A deck should be stained only if it is cleaned and has to be dry for 3-5days

2) Product Choice: Several factors have to be considered while choosing a deck stain. Some want to choose a color while some owners want to show off the natural color of the wood deck. Make sure you choose a color that has ultra violet blockers to minimize the UV blockers. Because of the surface is horizontal the deck is more prone to harsh climatic conditions such as heat and Ultra Violet Rays, and moisture in the form of snow, rain, frost and dew. Therefore choosing products like water roofers and translucent is very important.

3) Application: It is very important to follow instructions very clearly. Some products and semi solids require only one coat. But some solid colors may require multicoating. Keep the temperature in mind, it will be mentioned on the instruction. In the US and Canada the ideal is between May and October. To avoid direct sunlight apply coatings early mornings or late afternoons. Also it should not rain in the next 24 hours of application. The brush used should be of good quality. You have to make sure that the stain works into the wood.

Thus to have a deck clean and dust free make sure you make the right choice by using Cabot Deck Stain. Give maximum protection against harmful effects to your wood.

All Decked-Up!

Choosing the right deck color for your garden deck can be a task indeed for most do-it-yourself owners. Painting your home or garden or your garden deck on your own can be a fulfilling experience but there are too many things that can go wrong in the activity.
There are a few things that one must know in the painting of the deck.

The Right Color

It would be advisable to choose the right color based on your own perception, reading a few books on color theory, and getting an expert's advice. The following three parameters come across strikingly in coloring your deck: the number of application, the correct shade, and the tools for coloring.

Color of Shade

The first thing to do is confirm the color of shade you want to color your deck with. Remember, the faded color on someone's yard may look different than the one in the can. It is always good to trust the shade card or the color represented on the can.

Number of Applications

A paint job can look really shabby if you over-paint or under-paint it. To paint it right, you would need to understand a few fundamentals of painting. Most contractors feel that the more number of coats, the better. That is truly not correct. Most deck paints penetrate the surface of the wood. Over-coating can lead to a formation of one thick layer. This layer can peel off and can make your deck look tawdry. In case of water-repellant products, over application can lead to overly waxy or sticky surfaces. These surfaces take a long, long time to dry and impressions can form on them easily.

Tools for Coloring

The two most important tools for coloring are the deck brush and the deck sprayer. From your garage try to fish out an old rod from an old bicycle or some unused stick. This could work as a stirrer. Overalls and napkins make the package complete. The first two tools are the most critical of the lot and require you to pay special attention in choosing these. Pay attention to your garden and deck needs and accordingly choose from the variety available in the market. If you are using a mix of colors for your deck and fence, try to apply the paint on the fence first and then begin with the deck. The vertical paint is likely to drip over the deck.

Wide ranges of products for coating deck are available. There are four major categories of deck coatings: oil-based, alkyd oil-based, modified alkyd and acrylic/latex. Traditional oil based coats are still popular and widely used. Oil-based coatings offer excellent penetration, absorption and adhesion properties for wood. Lower quality formulations can be less resistant to mold and mildew and they lack durability too. Alkyd oil coatings are an improvement in oil-based coating with the addition of synthetic resins. These coatings are highly permeable and durable.

Acrylic/latex products are water-based coats that over a time wash away with soap and water. They have fewer odors and dry quickly. Drying too quickly lead to problems in adhesion to woods surface. Water-based coatings are also not very highly water repellent. If water penetrates wood it can cause permanent damage.

Benefits of Oil based Stain:
1. Linseed and Tung oil formula has excellent penetration properties.
2. Mildew resistant coating
3. Excellent UV reflecting properties, great for high altitude application
4. Water Repellant
5. Allows wood to breathe.
6. Brings back the natural luster of wood.

Preparation and Application of Stain

If any areas of the deck have started to splinter or crack scrub thoroughly with sand paper to remove any dead wood fibers and till new layer of wood is visible.
1. Clean surface thoroughly with soap and water or with high-pressure washer or sprayer.
2. Allow the surface to dry completely before coating with oil based stain. Wait at least for 24hrs before coating. If stained while the deck is still wet, the oil won't penetrate the wood. The stain will just penetrate the surface, instead of seeping in.
3. Immerse a brush (use a 4-inch brush) or long-handled roller into the stain. Absorb only enough stain for a few strokes. If possible, use a roller to first apply the stain, and then apply into the wood with brush. Use a paintbrush for difficult-to-reach places.
4. Wipe excess stain with duster.
5. Avoid staining at midday or in direct sunlight. Do not stain deck in extreme weather condition such as hot, cold or if windy.
6. If a second coat required wait for 4 hrs between applications.
7. Wait for 24hrs before using Deck.

Warning
Oil-based stains can be irritating to eyes, skin, nose, and throat. Can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue. Ingestion may cause vomiting.

Introduction -

Wood Decks are always exposed to severe weather conditions and longer periods of exposure may lead to shrinking and swelling of wood, checks and cracks, raised grains and mildew growth, enhancing the chances of insect attack and wood rot. To best maintain the durability and longevity of the deck, proper maintenance is required. Treating the wood deck with stains, sealers and finishes will lessen the above mentioned problems and ensure durability.

About Wood Deck Stains -

These days numerous types of stains are available, that provide the deck much needed protection from harsh weather conditions. They enhance the look of the wood by redefining its original color or emphasizing its natural grains and circles. A stain that may enhance the look on one type of wood may not be suitable to the other type, hence it is essential to know which type of stain suits which type of wood. A deck stain should be for exterior use.

Types of Stains -

Deck Stains may be oil based or water based. Different types of stains are available for different types of wood, like cedar and pressure treated wood. They can be solid or semi-transparent. Sealants that are clear or transparent can also be called stains. Solid stains provide a more consistent color to the deck. Semi-transparent satins enhance the natural looks of the wood; however, provide lesser protection from sunlight compared to the solid ones.

Tips on Proper Wood Deck Staining -

Most of the people tend to do over coating of stains which is not recommended as leads to build up of material forming a film that may eventually peel or crack. On a water repellant wood, over coating results in sticky surfaces as it prevents proper drying up.

Before applying the stain, the deck should be clean of all debris and mildew growth and completely dry. Stains can be applied using roller, brush, spray or a pad; however, brushing is considered the best method. For large, horizontal deck surfaces, spraying is fast and easy. For deck sidings, paint rollers can be used. Coating should be done carefully to prevent uneven coatings. Individual pieces of wood on the deck have to be coated along their entire length to prevent coating and marking laps. It is very essential to read the label instructions before using the stains considering the safety and environmental aspects.

Secret of long lasting elegant decks.

A new deck looks very alluring but this magic can wear off all too soon if proper maintenance is not given to the decks. The trick lies in preventive care.As an act of nature, any wooden surface when exposed to sunlight or other ravages of nature, over a period of time starts losing its sheen. If the wood is uncoated, the deterioration will be faster whereas, in coated wood, the process will take effect after a while. The best way is to take proactive steps to ensure wood remains protected well before the stains start appearing on the surfaces. There are a variety of methods, both mechanical and chemical to keep wood smiling all through.

Getting rid of stains- root cause analysis.

Having emphasised the importance of preventive maintenance, let us look at ways and means of removing the stains that have already crept in and are taking the beauty off the wooden decks. The first step is to identify the causes of discoloration to apply the correct solution to the problem. The various causes of the discoloration could be ingress of foreign matter such as bird dropping, grease, tree saps etc, stains from nails and iron articles ,tannins and other chemical agents originating from the wood itself, fungus, algae and fading and graying of wood due to extended exposure to sunlight, moisture , water . There can also be a decomposition of the original protective coatings given of wood.

Agents for refurbishing

Bleaches are a very common and effective way to lighten Deck stains. There are a variety of bleaches to choose from. Bleaches can be classified into three major categories; chlorine bleaches, peroxide type bleaches and oxalic acids. If we know what caused stain, it would be helpful in selecting the right kind of bleach.

Chlorine – Chlorine is a very strong bleaching agent and can remove or lighten most dye stains. It also kills algae, moss etc but it can also cause damage to the wood itself if too strong a concentration is used. Besides, chorine can prove detrimental to surrounding greenery. A solution of about one and a half cup per gallon of water can be considered safe.

Peroxide bleaches – These come in two types A and B type. A combination of these should be used for effective results, Used individually, the peroxide bleaches may not be good enough to lighten deck stains. The combination is highly effective in lightening pigment stains, but it is generally not so good at dealing tiwht stains from dyes.

Oxalic Acids -Oxalic acid is a very good solution to stains caused by effects of oxidation. An example could be that black spot on the wood that was caused by contact of water with the wood, Water, as we know contains iron and the reaction of the tannic acids in woods causes these black spots. We can also see black spots in areas where nails or other fasteners are used, as contact with water results in the black ring. Oxalic acids are best to lighten the effects of exposure to weather conditions. There is a graying discoloration on wood due to outdoor exposure. Oxalic acids can lighten the color and establish an even tone on the entire wood.

A word of Caution

Finally, as we begin to use these bleaches, care must be taken to ensure protective masks, gloves are used so that the toxic nature of bleaches causes no harm to the person doing the job.
